Is TMS Right for You?

TMS is usually considered when depression or OCD hasn't improved enough with medication and therapy, or when medication side effects have been hard to live with. You may be a good candidate if:

  • —You've tried one or more antidepressants without enough relief
  • —Side effects such as weight gain, fatigue, emotional numbness or sexual side effects made medication hard to continue
  • —You have OCD symptoms that continue despite medication and/or therapy
  • —You'd prefer a treatment that doesn't add another daily pill
  • —You are an adult

The only way to know for sure is a consultation. Dr. Mohammed reviews your history, past treatments and a medical safety screening, including any metal or implanted devices in or near the head, before recommending TMS.

How TMS Works

Depression is linked with lower activity in brain regions that help regulate mood, especially the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. During TMS, a magnetic coil placed against your head sends focused magnetic pulses to that area. The pulses create small electrical currents that stimulate nerve cells. Over a series of sessions, this helps strengthen the brain networks involved in mood. For OCD, a different protocol targets the circuits involved in obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors.

What a TMS Session Looks Like

  • —You sit in a comfortable reclining chair, fully awake. No anesthesia, no sedation, no needles.
  • —A treatment coil rests gently against your head. You'll hear a clicking sound (earplugs are provided) and feel a tapping sensation on your scalp.
  • —Each session lasts about 18 to 25 minutes, depending on your protocol.
  • —Afterward, you can drive, work and go about your day as usual.

A typical course is five sessions a week for about six weeks, often followed by a short taper. Many of our patients schedule TMS before work, at lunch or on the way home.

Benefits of TMS Therapy

  • —Non-drug: no systemic side effects such as weight gain, drowsiness or sexual dysfunction
  • —No anesthesia and no memory loss, unlike electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)
  • —Works alongside your current care: TMS can be added to medication and therapy
  • —Often covered by insurance, including Medicare, when medical criteria are met
  • —FDA-cleared for major depressive disorder and OCD

The most common side effect is temporary scalp discomfort or headache, which usually eases within the first week or two. Seizure is a rare risk, which is why every patient is screened before treatment.
